MONTE CASTELLARE
POTA I-1429 ~ JN53FS
Dopo alcuni giorni di pioggia, per fortuna la domenica è una bella giornata di sole. Così approfitto per ritornare, dopo circa un anno, ad attivare il Monte Castellare I-1429. L'attivazione inizia subito con diversi QSO a 145.500 FM. Tra questi, interessante è stato il contatto con Luca IW2GAL, il quale stava facendo trekking all'isola della Palmaria (una piccola isola davanti Portovenere nel Golfo della Spezia), tra l'altro anche referenza POTA I-0695.
Poi isso la mia antenna QUAD autocostruita ed inizio a chiamare in 10m SSB. Dopo i primi QSO con alcuni amici italiani ecco il primo bel DX da 12.500 km con l'Instituto Balseiro & Centro Atómico Bariloche sito in Patagonia LU9VD. Un ottimo contatto e di eccellente qualità! Dopo pochi altri QSO con Italia e Russia, ecco un altro DX sempre in Argentina con il Radio Club General Roca LV2V. QRB 12.000 km ;-)
Dopo questo contatto però, un forte colpo di vento mi fa cadere l'antenna in un grande rovo di more, ricco di spine. Delle persone gentili mi aiutano a ritirare su l'antenna, mentre io ero entrato nel rovo per liberare il filo rimasto incastrato fra i tanti pruni. Nella caduta oltretutto si rompe anche il tubo di plastica della parte inferiore della QUAD. Grrrr... Deciso però a non darmi per vinto, mentre mangio qualcosa, mi metto a ragionare come poter riparare l'antenna. Non avevo voglia di montare un'altra antenna che comunque avevo con me. E nonostante i 10 QSO minimi previsti dal regolamento POTA li avessi già raggiunti, volevo continuare a divertirmi in 10m. La giornata era ancora lunga... Così con un po' di fantasia e con ciò che la natura mi poteva offrire, uso un piccolo bastoncino di legno per sistemare l'antenna che torna come nuova. Rimontata l'antenna e stabilizzata con un tirante, dopo circa un'oretta di pausa, riprendo le mi chiamate: CQ POTA CQ POTA ... { P.S. - Il giorno dopo l'attivazione, ovvero il lunedì, ho sostituito la parte rotta dell'antenna. Apportando anche una modifica ad essa in modo che sia più rinforzato il punto debole dove si è troncata in due, probabilmente a causa del peso del BALUN 1:1 }
Inizia così (finalmente) un pile-up di stazioni del nord America, ma dopo un po' alcuni amici mi segnalano che ho una modulazione "sporca" e poco comprensibile. Il problema era dato dal microfono incorporato nelle cuffie che risolvo sostituendolo, ovvero utilizzando nuovamente il microfono originale Yaesu MH-31. Riprendo così le chiamate e cerco di gestire il grosso pile-up formatesi. Seppur la maggioranza dei contatti proviene sempre da stazioni del NA, tornano a chiamarmi anche amici dal sud e centro America. Munir HJ3ESF dalla Columbia, Sixson YV1SW dal Venezuela ed anche un nuovo OM dal Messico: XE2LGR Lino. Tutti iscritti al programma POTA e con i quali realizzo ottimi QSO.
Nella prima parte della mia attivazione, mi segue da casa l'amico Stefano IW2MJQ. Mentre nel pomeriggio mi da supporto Roberto IK0BDO, che mi segue tramite alcune stazioni SDR americane presenti sul web. Grazie dei suggerimenti.
La propagazione non era forse così buona come quella della domenica precedente e la mia posizione seppur discreta non era eccezionale. Nonostante ciò e tutti gli imprevisti durante l'attivazione, chiuderò la giornata con 150 QSO e 13 P2P. Un altro bel record!!
Purtroppo mi sono reso conto di non essere riuscito a collegare tutti quanti mi chiamavano. Alcuni segnali erano troppo bassi per essere compresi, uno fra i tanti è stato anche quello di DOM NC4XL. Peccato... Nutro inoltre un dubbio su un call: BO0LZY Sarebbe il mio primo QSO con Taiwan! Durante il collegamento gli ho chiesto più volte il nominativo e sono quasi sicuro al 100% di averlo capito bene, ma purtroppo non trovo nessuna corrispondenza su QRZ o similari.

After a few days of rain, luckily Sunday is a beautiful sunny day. So I take this opportunity to return, after about a year, to activate Monte Castellare I-1429. The activation begins immediately with several QSOs at 145.500 FM. Among these, interesting was the contact with Luca IW2GAL, who was trekking to the island of Palmaria (a small island in front of Portovenere in the Gulf of La Spezia), among other things also reference POTA I-0695.
Then I set up my home-built QUAD antenna and start calling on 10m SSB. After the first QSOs with some Italian friends here is the first nice 12,500 km DX with the Instituto Balseiro & Centro Atómico Bariloche located in Patagonia LU9VD. After this contact, however, a strong gust of wind made my antenna fall into a large blackberry bramble, full of thorns. Some kind people help me lift the antenna up, while I entered the bramble to free the wire that was stuck among the many thorns. Furthermore, the plastic tube on the lower part of the QUAD also breaks in the fall. Grrrr... However, determined not to give up, while I eat something, I start thinking about how I can repair the antenna. I didn't want to mount another antenna which I had with me anyway. And although I had already achieved the minimum 10 QSOs required by the POTA regulation, I wanted to continue having fun on 10m. The day was still long... So with a little imagination and with what nature could offer me, I use a small wooden stick to fix the antenna which is like new again. Once the antenna has been reassembled and stabilized with a tie rod, after about an hour's break, I resume calling: CQ POTA CQ POTA ... { P.S. - The day after activation, i.e. Monday, I replaced the broken part of the antenna. Also making a modification to it so that the weak point where it split in two is more reinforced, probably due to the weight of the BALUN 1:1 }
Thus begins (finally) a pile-up of North American stations, but after a while some friends point out to me that I have a "dirty" and difficult to understand modulation. The problem was caused by the microphone built into the headphones which I solved by replacing it, or by using the original Yaesu MH-31 microphone again. So I resume the calls and try to manage the large pile-up that has formed. Although the majority of contacts always come from NA stations, friends from South and Central America also come back to call me. Munir HJ3ESF from Columbia, Sixson YV1SW from Venezuela and also a new OM from Mexico: XE2LGR Lino. All registered in the POTA program and with whom I make excellent QSOs.
In the first part of my activation, my friend Stefano IW2MJQ follows me from home. While in the afternoon Roberto IK0BDO gives me support, following me via some American SDR stations on the web. Thanks for the suggestions.

Unfortunately I realized that I hadn't been able to connect everyone who called me. Some signals were too low to be understood, one of many was also that of DOM NC4XL. Sin... I also have a doubt about a call: BO0LZY It would be my first QSO with Taiwan! During the connection I asked him for his name several times and I am almost 100% sure that I understood him correctly, but unfortunately I can't find any correspondence on QRZ or similar.
